Sir Kyffin Williams

Kyffin was a great help in my attempts to gain funding to study for a Masters Degree ...
I had a place at Newcastle University and was in need of funds to pay the fees.  Kyffin heard about my situation and invited me over to his studio and asked that I bring some examples of my paintings.  I took a van full of work over to his cottage on the banks of the Menai Straits. We spent the afternoon talking about painting and I listened to Kyffins opinions on the current arts council policies...

Four days later, I received a letter from Kyffin advising I apply to a foundation which supported postgraduate study. Within two weeks I had the funds to embark on my studies, which I completed two years later.  I found Kyffin to be good company; he was knowledgeable, kind, funny, articulate and opinionated. He also gave me a lot of advice about painting and developing a career in painting. One point I recall. He said ‘in his opinion, if an art work was easy to forge, then it’s not very good’.
